What inspired us?
When a show becomes part of family life, its little details become familiar too. You recognise a character’s expression before they’ve said a word. For some of us, the look of Bluey is part of what makes it so comforting to return to. That familiarity was what inspired us to try a 2D version.
Seeing the two styles side by side is interesting, but we wanted to see the scene in motion too. The balloon, the expressions and the scramble to keep it in the air are what bring this little moment to life. Would it feel different with simpler colours and familiar outlines?
We enjoyed exploring that question, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the film’s 3D animation brings to Bluey’s world too. There’s room to enjoy a new look while still feeling fond of the one we’ve grown up with as a family.
How we brought our version to life
Keeping Bluey and Bingo looking like themselves from one frame to the next turned out to be one of the biggest challenges. A marking would move, an expression would change, or the balloon would suddenly be somewhere it shouldn’t. Small details made a surprisingly big difference once the video was playing.
We used AI-assisted tools to create an initial animation pass, then spent a lot of time repairing individual frames in Photoshop and refining the video in After Effects and Premiere. That included smoothing out movement and adding in-between frames where repeated images made the animation stutter. Each correction needed to fit with the frames before and after it, which meant plenty of small adjustments along the way.
You’ll still notice some shifting shapes and wobbly details in the finished version. It’s an imperfect fan experiment, but one we enjoyed making and wanted to share with you.
Does the 2D version feel different to you?
For us, the familiar outlines bring a little of the TV series’ feeling into the scene. It’s fun to see a new moment in a style we already know so well, even with the imperfections in our version. Making it has also given us another reason to appreciate how much the smallest expressions and movements matter.
