Jack is recounting his first day of school to his mum, starting with the car ride there. His dad and sister tease him about forgetting his hat and having trouble sitting still or following instructions. When they arrive at the Glasshouse school, Calypso suggests he introduce himself to Rusty. Jack finds Rusty playing army and asks to join in, warning that he’s not good at following instructions. However, when Rusty gives him some orders, Jack obeys right away, and Rusty lets him play.
Rusty explains that Jack needs to go through basic training first, with him as his drill sergeant. He gives Jack a spare hat and teaches him various army skills, including hand signals, push-ups, code names for locations, and dust-offs. Jack’s favorite part is playing sentry duty, where he feels responsible for the other soldiers. Afterward, Rusty shares some rations with him and mentions that his dad is in the army and will be home soon with some condensed milk. When a brush turkey appears, Rusty declares they’re outnumbered and need a dust-off, asking Jack for their location’s code name. Jack remembers it’s Tango seven, and they make a run for an alternate landing zone, with Jack using his speed to get them to the “chopper” – a treehouse.
As they look out over the meadow, Rusty asks Jack why he chose this school, and Jack admits he has trouble sitting still, following directions, and remembering things. Rusty points out that he’s good at playing army, which involved many of those skills. The scene cuts back to Jack telling his mum about his day, and she comments on how much detail he’s sharing. Jack asks for condensed milk, saying he got it from Rusty, whose dad brought some back from patrol.
