Bluey, Snickers, and Coco start playing “What’s the time Mrs. Wolf?” but Coco uses her usual trick to get the others to come to her. Bluey points out that Coco always does this to make it easy for herself. They decide to switch to “Shadowlands” instead, where the shadowy areas are safe and the sunny spots are filled with crocodiles. Bluey reminds Coco to follow the rules and not take any shortcuts.
The kids take off, running and jumping through the shadows, laughing and having a great time. When they come across a big patch of sunlight that Snickers can’t jump over, Coco suggests taking an easy way out, but Bluey says no. Instead, Bluey and Coco come up with a plan to extend the shadow by climbing on each other, and Snickers successfully jumps the gap. They continue playing, using the shadows of cars parked on the road to stay safe. But when a car pulls out, it leaves Bluey facing a huge gap. Coco suggests another shortcut, asking why they have to follow the rules, and Bluey replies, “Because they’re the rules!” Just then, a bus passes by, casting a shadow over the gap, and Bluey seizes the opportunity.
The kids keep playing, running up the shadow of a palm tree trunk and then finding themselves stranded on a shadow island surrounded by crocodiles. They howl in sadness, but their mothers, who are on a nearby picnic blanket, hear them and bring out some cupcakes. Snickers and Coco suggest changing the rules so they can eat, and Bluey can’t think of a good reason to say no. Just as they’re about to set off, a cloud appears overhead, casting a shadow over the entire field. The kids make a mad dash to cover the distance while the ground is still in the shadows. Snickers gets thrown by the others because of his short legs, but they just make it. They collapse in a fit of giggles, realizing that having rules made the game more fun. In a final game of “What’s the time Mrs. Wolf?”, Coco calls “Dinnertime” before the others get too close, and Bluey is caught off guard, unable to run.
